Last night (24 May 2007, previews from 4 May), Eamonn Walker became the first black man to play the title role in Othello at Shakespeare’s Globe. It’s the first time the play has been mounted at the modern replica, now in its tenth anniversary season, of the bard’s 17th-century theatre.
Directed by Wilson Milam, this production of Othello employs Renaissance staging, costume and music. It continues in rep until 19 August 2007 as part of artistic director Dominic Dromgoole’s Renaissance + Revolution summer season. For 1st Night Photos, our Whatsonstage.com photographer Dan Wooller was on hand for the curtain call at Shakespeare’s Globe.
The Globe’s 2007 summer repertory season continues with new productions of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and Love’s Labour’s Lost, and premieres of Jack Shepherd’s Holding Fire! and Eric Schlosser’s We, the People.
