With a raft of rave reviews, broken box office records, two sell-out seasons at the National, an oft-extended West End run and Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and Laurence Olivier awards to its name, it’s hard to think of many more accolades to heap on War Horse. But it’s fair to say that two attendees at last night’s performance at the New London Theatre caused more than a frisson of fresh excitement. The Queen made a rare private visit to the theatre, her first in four years, to catch War Horse at the New London Theatre – which attests to just how far-reaching the play’s popularity is!

Set during the First World War, War Horse, based on Michael Morpurgo’s children’s novel, concerns the tale of a young recruit’s bravery, loyalty, and extraordinary bond with his horse. The Queen and Prince Philip seemed to thoroughly enjoy. Sources at the theatre tell us the royal couple were “having a great time”. And so did the rest of the audience, who gave the royals – and presumably the show – a standing ovation at the end of the evening.
