Casting has been announced for You Stupid Darkness!, Sam Steiner's new play at Theatre Royal Plymouth co-produced with Paines Plough.

Set in a helpline call centre, the piece explores how individuals can struggle for optimism in an increasingly chaotic world.

Appearing in the show will be David Carlyle (The Tell-Tale Heart) as Jon, Andrew Finnigan (Broken Biscuits) as Joey, Becci Gemmell (Eyam) as Frances and Lydia Larson (Skin a Cat) as Angie. The piece is directed by Paines Plough joint artistic director James Grieve with design by Amy Jane Cook, movement by Annie Lunnette Deakin-Foster, sound by Dominic Kennedy and lighting by Peter Small.

Steiner's previous work includes Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons which was produced by Walrus Theatre and toured nationally and ran at the Edinburgh Fringe, as well as Kanye the First, which premiered at HighTide festival in 2017.

Grieve said: "I am hugely excited to continue Paines Plough's 40 year relationship with Theatre Royal Plymouth to present another World Premiere by a major writer following in the footsteps of many previous co-productions like Philip Ridley's Mercury Fur, Rona Munro's Long Time Dead, Mike Bartlett's Love, Love, Love and James Graham's The Angry Brigade."

The show runs from 7 to 23 February.
