There are many awards in the theatre – our own WhatsOnStage Awards chief among them. From an audience’s point of view, one of the most down-to-earth ones is that for The Most Welcoming Theatre. Organised by the Theatrical Management Association, voting is now open and runs until 30 September via the mytheatrematters.com website.

Nominated theatres in East Anglia include the Bury St Edmunds Theatre Royal, the Cambridge Junction and the Corn Exchange, the Colchester Mercury, Hertford Theatre, Hornchurch’s Queen’s Theatre and, of course, last year’s winner the Ipswich New Wolsey Theatre .

Norwich’s Playhouse, Puppet Theatre and Theatre Royal, Peterborough’s Key Theatre, the Cliffs Pavilion and the Palace Theatre in Southend and both the Watford Palace Theatre and Watford Colosseum are also on the list.

South of the Thames and along the Thames Valley nominations include Anvil Arts in Basingstoke, the Theatres Royal of Brighton, Winchester and Windsor, the Marlow Theatre in Canterbury, Chichester’s Theatre in the Park and Minerva Theatre, the Devonshire Park Theatre in Eastbourne, the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkstone.

Other theatres in the southern counties include Glyndebourne Opera House, Guildford’s G-Live, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and Mill Studio, the Hazlitt Arts Centre in Maidstone both the Newbury Watermill and the Mill at Sonning, Southampton’s Mayflower and Nuffield Theatres, South Hill Park Arts Centre and the New Victoria Theatre in Woking.

If your favourite theatre isn’t listed, by the way, there is a facility of the website for you to nominate it. Theatres matter to audiences just as surely as audiences matter to theatres, so have your say. And don’t forget to sign up to the MyTheatreMatters! campaign while you’re about it.
