Ready for some more Sondheim? If the various productions, proms and other celebrations that have already taken place or been announced for 2010’s year-long celebrations in honour of the 80th birthday of Stephen Sondheim haven’t sated you, here’s another to whet your appetite. We hear that the Roundabout Theatre’s tribute production Sondheim on Sondheim, which had an extended season this spring/summer at Studio 54 on Broadway, may be reprised for a limited West End engagement to finish the birthday year this autumn/winter.
Conceived and directed by James Lapine, the book writer on Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods and Passion, Sondheim on Sondheim comprises taped interviews with the legendary composer/lyricist and live performances of lesser-known songs from myriad musicals, including some of his student shows. The New York cast featured Sondheim diva Barbara Cook.
