Open-air Les Misérables in Hudson Valley – first look photos

Now something a bit different – take a look at images from Hudson Valley Shakespeare’s production of Les Misérables, which is now playing in Garrison, New York.

Directed by Jenn Thompson, the production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s musical runs through 27 September 2026. Music supervision is by Amanda Morton.

Based on Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Misérables follows Jean Valjean, who is imprisoned for 19 years after stealing a loaf of bread. After being given a second chance, Valjean attempts to rebuild his life while being pursued by Inspector Javert. The story unfolds against the backdrop of revolution in 19th-century France. The musical features songs including “I Dreamed a Dream”, “On My Own”, “Bring Him Home” and “One Day More”.

Josh Young leads the production as Jean Valjean, with Denis Lambert as Javert, Haley Dortch as Fantine and Enjolras, Haley Rose Ciaramella as Eponine, Alex Ross as Marius and Ana Paola Garcia as Cosette. Nance Williamson plays Madam Thénardier, with David Beach as the Bishop and Monsieur Thénardier.

The company also includes Kelly Berman, Payton Bioletto, Aamar-Malik Culbreth, Lucas Hakoshima, Safiya Harris, Stefanie Londino, Maya Mays, Brian Kim McCormick, Madelynn Sue Merced, Anand Nagraj, Luis Quintero, Khloe Saclolo, Riley Thompson, Christian David Tinajero, Josh Totora and Caroline Santiago Turner.

Madelynn Sue Merced plays Young Cosette, while Khloe Saclolo plays Young Eponine and Riley Thompson plays Gavroche. Culbreth, meanwhile, is also appearing in Hudson Valley Shakespeare’s King Lear as Lear’s Knight, while Garcia, Hakoshima, Harris, Mays, Nagraj, Quintero, Tinajero and Turner are also appearing across the company’s other 2026 productions.

The creative team is led by Thompson, with Morton overseeing the music. The production uses the musical’s original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, additional material by James Fenton, and the adaptation and original direction by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. Stephen Metcalfe, Christopher Jahnke and Stephen Brooker provide the orchestrations, based on the original orchestrations by John Cameron.

The creative team also includes Buffy Cardoza on props design, Rhett Guter as choreographer, Tilly Grimes on costume design, Matt Richards on lighting design and Ken Travis on sound design. Alex Gutierrez serves as music director and conductor, alongside music supervisor Amanda Morton. Janelle Caso is production stage manager, with Daniel Vaughn and Dailee Morrone as assistant stage managers, Molly Emmens as production assistant and Blake Simis as child wrangler.

The orchestra is conducted by Alex Gutierrez, with Stephen Ferri serving as music coordinator and associate conductor. The orchestra also features Peter Arfsten, Bradley Frizzell and Jeffery Reinhardt on reeds, Evan Schreiber on trumpet, Matthew Wozniak on trombone, Steven Harmon and Alejandro Salaverry on horns, Danielle Sinclair on violin, Rachel Evans on viola, Chris Santos on cello, TJ Bastone on bass, Tim Schneider on percussion, and Ferri and Refiye Tappan on keyboards.

The production stage management team includes Janelle Caso as production stage manager, Daniel Vaughn as assistant stage manager and Dailee Morrone as assistant stage manager, with Molly Emmens as production assistant. Hudson Valley Shakespeare is presenting the production by arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh and Music Theatre International.

Performances continue through Sunday 27 September, with various matinee and evening performances scheduled. All upcoming performances are currently sold out, with a waitlist available through the Hudson Valley Shakespeare box office.
