Annette Nuttall reviews ”Oh No It Isn’t!” at the Coventry Belgrade, their adult pantomime offering
Although based around the staging of a pantomime, this show is more of a festive offering for adults. Written and directed by Nick Walker, this comedy thriller has plenty of local references and engages the audience with as many twists as an Agatha Christie mystery.
The action starts backstage of a production of Jack and the Beanstalk (the Belgrade's Christmas pantomime this year). It soon becomes clear that the cast aren’t getting on as well as they should be. Sal (Clare Louise Connolly), the smallest giant in the business and Tony (Richard Kidd) appear to have it in for Jackie (Katy Stephens), the diva principal boy. Jackie’s only ally is Sam (John Mckeever). With various murder plots and weapons masquerading as props, the comedy soon follows. As the action moves in front of the curtain, the players in the pantomime have to carry out their murderous plans as part of the show.
Showing a different side to the happy face of pantomime, this play keeps the audience guessing and laughing. The humour is adult but subtle, never quite over stepping the mark. Each character is defined and well crafted, the comedy elements delivered perfectly. The wild goose chase and dancing cow are worth the ticket alone. The minimal set works perfectly and helps to create an atmosphere of a budget theatre company.
With a running time of around an hour, this show is a great start to an evening out. It’s light hearted relief at a busy time of year, a playful jibe at traditional pantomime. A very enjoyable Christmas offering, oh no it isn’t, oh yes it is!
