”Myths of War” will be a series of dramatic readings at the Park Theatre
Mark Rylance will appear at the Park Theatre in June in a series of dramatic readings about war.
Myths of War is a one-off event being held at the theatre in support of Stop The War Coalition, which has been dedicated to ending wars across the globe since 2001.
Rylance will read historian Howard Zinn’s Three Holy Wars, a piece about the three wars in American history that are "uncriticisable". Zinn was a famed anti-war activist who wrote about civil rights, US labor history and the stupidity of war.
Kika Markham will also read from The Road Back by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The novel is about the experience of young men in Germany who have returned from World War One, and was first serialised in a German newspaper in the early '30s.
Creative director of Park Theatre Melli Marie said: "As a theatre, it is important for us to create the space for all conversations to take place, no matter how uncomfortable, controversial or unpopular.
"We believe that by bringing Howard's work to light at Park Theatre we are giving our audience a chance to think about this global issue from a personal perspective."
The event will take place on Sunday 18 June, with all proceeds from tickets going to support Stop the War.
