Mark Rylance and Sophie Okonedo triumph at Tonys

Mark Rylance won his third Tony Award last night, for his reprisal of Olivia in the Globe's Twelfth Night, while his fellow Brit Sophie Okonedo also won for her Broadway debut in A Raisin in the Sun.

Rylance, whose category – Best Featured Actor in a Play – was the first to be announced, overcame competition from co-stars Stephen Fry and Paul Chahidi. In his speech he paid tribute to Globe mastermind Sam Wanamaker.

Accepting her award, Okonedo said she was "loving it on Broadway," and thanked producer Scott Rudin for believing that "a Jewish, Nigerian Brit could come over the pond and play one of America's most iconic parts". A Raisin in the Sun also won Best Play Revival.

Last night's ceremony, which was hosted at New York's Radio City Music Hall by Hugh Jackman, also saw acting awards go to Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston and Audra Mcdonald, who became the most decorated actress in Tonys history by winning her sixth honour, for her performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill.

Former Tonys host Neil Patrick Harris, one of the many performers on the night, proved a popular winner for his role as a transgender rock singer in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, one of the show's four awards including Best Revival of a Musical.

Comedy musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder also won four, including Best Musical, on a night that didn't see a single show dominate.
