As you enter the Stand Comedy Club, Josie Long hands you a copy of her official ‘showgramme’, a lovingly hand drawn pamphlet of musings from the show.

This one, unlike her recent others, is not focused on politics – although she can’t resist a few barbed remarks, and did have a prophecy in a dream which is passed on in cartoon form.

Cara Josephine, named after her recently born niece, is a beautifully crafted hour focusing on love, family and heartbreak, and sees Long look back on the past year with an openness and self-reflection that brings a new element to her typically whimsical stand-up shows.

Long explores why she’s discovered a passion for the outdoors, her inability to be alone as well as explaining her penchant for recreating 1940s American film noir and letting us in on a game she plays at classical concerts.

If you’re after a hilarious and touching hour of comedy, then look no further than Josie Long. After all, why live on your knees?

Josie Long: Cara Josephine runs at The Stand until 24 August
