Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford will star in Sunday in the Park with George in the West End in 2020.

Gyllenhaal, known for his screen roles in Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain and the forthcoming Spiderman: Far From Home will play Georges Seurat in the musical, while Tony Award-winner Ashford (Kinky Boots, You Can't Take It with You) takes on the roles of Dot and Marie.

The pair return to Sarna Lapine's production, having previously appeared in the musical in New York at the Hudson Theatre in 2017.

Gyllenhaal said: "Performing Sunday in the Park with George with the brilliant Annaleigh Ashford was one of the greatest joys of my career, I've also deeply missed the West End and so to be bringing Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical there alongside Annaleigh is both humbling and thrilling."

The concert production will run for a limited season at the Savoy Theatre from 11 June to 5 September, with further casting and official opening night to be announced.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning piece, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, follows Georges Seurat as he tries to complete his famous painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

It initially ran on Broadway in 1984 and won two Tony Awards, going on to win two Olivier Awards when it had its London premiere in 1990 including Best New Musical. The revival at the Savoy marks 30 years since the original UK production.
