Temi Wilkey: Lover Girl at Pleasance Courtyard – Edinburgh Fringe review

Heading across town from Summerhall into a flatter, wider stage at Pleasance Courtyard inevitably dilutes the immediate intimacy of Temi Wilkey’s storytelling. Yet Lover Girl – the middle entry in her Main Character triptych following her first show back in 2024 – demonstrates an artist maturing in real time. Claiming she’s launching herself back onto the romantic market and on the hunt for the perfect person, Wilkey commands the space with an effortless poise, breaking the fourth wall in a manner that feels equal parts vulnerable and magnetic.

Her exploration of her singledom and bisexuality pulls no punches, dismantling every shade of the romantic spectrum with a gloriously uncompromising candour. It leans heavily into stand-up territory, straddling that Fringe-favourite sweet spot between theatre and comedy. The staging takes an early bizarre turn when her own body parts demand their own theatrical solos (the concept of infinity pussy has nothing to do with a cosmic cat, even if the humour remains delightfully out of this world.)

Ragevan Vasan’s slick direction keeps the pace snappy, perfectly complemented by visual flair in the wardrobe department. The show’s only real stumble lies at the beginning of its final third, which feels both a smidge repetitive and a touch abrupt – rather than fully earned or resolving.

What elevates the performance into four-star territory is its remarkable closing shift: the playful, chaotic riffs suddenly dissolve into a captivatingly crafted finale of raw vulnerability. It is a riotous hour of entertainment, and I will be first in line for the trilogy’s conclusion.
