Almost five years after it was first seen in London, Hadestown is finally set to return to the UK.
The musical is based on Anaïs Mitchell’s concept album, which mixes American folk with New Orleans jazz. It loosely adapts the Greek myth of tragic lovers Orpheus and Eurydice as well as the gods Hades and Persephone, and was first seen on UK shores at the National Theatre in November 2018, running until January 2019 before having its official Broadway opening night on 17 April 2019. It went on to win eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, later that summer.
Critic Sarah Crompton said that the show “can take the breath away”in her four-star review.
Hadestown has design by Rachel Hauck, costume design by Michael Krass, lighting design by Bradley King, sound design by Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz, choreography by David Neumann, musical direction and vocal arrangements by Liam Robinson, orchestrations and arrangements by Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose, with Ken Cerniglia as dramaturg.
Casting for the West End run is to be revealed.
