Tony and Grammy award-winning musical Hadestown is set to make its West End debut next February.
Following its sold-out run at the National Theatre in 2018, the critically acclaimed show returns to the UK after five years, with tickets going on sale from 23 May 2023, at 12 pm. Hadestown features music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell, a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, and direction by Tony Award-winner Rachel Chavkin.
The show is a genre-defying new musical that tells two mythic love stories – that of Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone – with both on a journey to the underworld and back.
The show will play at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in London from 10 February 2024. Tickets are priced from £20.
Anaïs Mitchell, the show’s creator, expressed excitement about bringing Hadestown back to London. She said: “We’re all thrilled to be bringing Hadestown back to London! We truly loved our time at the National Theatre in 2018 and felt so welcomed by your city that it feels like a homecoming to be returning (to the West End)!” She also revealed that the show had undergone significant development based on things they learned during its pre-Broadway run at the National Theatre.
The show’s creative team features several award-winning designers, including Tony Award-winner Rachel Hauck for set design, four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Krass for costume design, two-time Tony Award-winner Bradley King for lighting design, Tony Award-winners Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz for sound design, and Obie Award-winner and Chita Rivera Award-winner David Neumann for choreography.
Hadestown is produced in London by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, Tom Kirdahy, and the National Theatre in association with JAS Theatricals. The casting for the show is yet to be announced.
Hadestown opened in 2016 at the New York Theatre Workshop before a production in Edmonton, Canada, and its sold-out run at the National Theatre in 2018. The show then premiered at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theater, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Hadestown now holds the record for the highest-grossing musical and longest-running show in the theatre’s 100-year history. The North American tour of the show is celebrating its second year of sold-out performances, with several return engagements announced from July 2023.
