Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik has died aged 56

Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik has died aged 56.

Sheik was responsible for a variety of hit musicals including Spring Awakening and American Psycho, both gaining cult status. His next musical, Nero, is due to open this autumn in London, while other shows included The Secret Life of Bees. 

Sheik launched his mainstream music career in 1996 with his self-titled debut album on Atlantic Records. Its lead single, “Barely Breathing,” reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining on the chart for 55 consecutive weeks and earning a 1998 Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

In the mid-2000s, Sheik transitioned into musical theatre, collaborating with lyricist Steven Sater on Spring Awakening (2006). The production won eight Tony Awards in 2007, earning Sheik individual wins for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, as well as the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

His subsequent stage scores include Nero (Another Golden Rome) (2006), Whisper House (2010), American Psycho (which premiered at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2013 before moving to Broadway in 2016), Alice By Heart (2019), and The Secret Life of Bees (2019)

A new production of Spring Awakening is also set to run in New York this autumn.

His death was confirmed by his mother in the New York Times, adding that the cause was organ failure.

A statement on Sheik’s Instagram feed reads:
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Duncan Sheik.

“The world has a lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater. From his Grammy-nominated hit “Barely Breathing” to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.

“Duncan was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, inteligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him.

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community. His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Duncan passed away last night surrounded by love.”
