Adrian Lester has hinted at a potential return to the works of Stephen Sondheim in an upcoming project.

Speaking on the red carpet at the newly opened revival of Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods, the actor praised the composer’s enduring legacy. Discussing why Sondheim’s work continues to connect with audiences, Lester noted: “Sondheim will make you think that he’s writing something simple while doing something very, very, very complex – musically, lyrically, and with the characters”.

Lester added that Sondheim’s shows “should be revived constantly, again and again”. He then explicitly linked the composer’s work to his own upcoming projects, revealing: “I’m thinking of something that’s going to happen in my future that I will speak on later on”.

When pressed on whether he was teasing a future Sondheim project, Lester jokingly attempted to backpedal, saying: “I’m not saying anything right now! I don’t know what’s going on, I don’t know what you mean”.

Asked if the project might involve Sweeney Todd – referenced via a rocking chair – Lester dismissed the suggestion, insisting there were “no chairs, no chairs, no chairs, but… definitely lots of… colour”. The comment prompted speculation surrounding Sunday in the Park with George, which prominently features the signature tune “Color and Light”.

Attempting to brush off the clue, Lester added: “I don’t know what you’re talking about! I’m going to go talk to a friend and then maybe get back to you,” before concluding with “We’ll see. We’ll see”.

Lester previously starred as Bobby in Sam Mendes’ 1995 Donmar Warehouse production of Sondheim’s Company, a role that earned him an Olivier Award.

He recently wrapped up a five-star turn in Cyrano de Bergerac, a performance near certain to be a contender for the London theatre awards season. He has already been nominated ahead of this Monday’s UK Theatre Awards.

Further official details regarding the potential production have yet to be announced.

A production of Sunday in the Park with George, slated for the Barbican, was recently postponed following the exit of stars Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande.
