London’s Riverside Studios will host the premiere of PlayAI, a theatrical project written by an AI model called ChatGPT, on Friday 28 April 2023.

With three additional performances on Saturday 29 April, the experiment is produced by Metatheto Theatrical, tying into broader discussions about the future of the theatre industry and its relationship with artificial intelligence.

Rather than simply penning the text, the company has said that the AI model will suggest lighting, sound, and set design for the piece of work it creates. After the final performance, a panel debate will be held to further explore the subject and stimulate more discussion.

Matt Bond, who will direct the production, believes that the integration of AI into theatre production is inevitable and that it will only augment the work of industry professionals. He stated, “AI in 2023 is looking very much like 2007 and the advent of mass social media and the iPhone.” The marketing material for the piece says “this project is anything but a gimmick”.

The production of PlayAI is a collaboration of various companies, including Metatheto Theatrical, Pearson Casting, and Jack Maple Productions. The cast is yet to be announced.

The play will run on Friday 28 April at 7pm and Saturday 29 April at 1pm, 4pm, and 7pm.
