Newsies eyeing up Piccadilly & Savoy for Spring 2014?

The long-rumoured West End transfer of Newsies is inching closer to confirmation.

According to the Daily Mail, producers Disney are “trying to secure either the Piccadilly or the Savoy theatres” for Newsies in Spring 2014.

Sources close to the production indicated recently to Whatsonstage.com that a venue could be announced next week.

Based on the 1992 film of the same name that starred Christian Bale and Bill Pullman, the show centres on the exploits of a group of newspaper boys in 1900s New York, and features music by Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Sister Act the Musical), lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles).

According to the Mail, director Jeff Calhoun is “casting as early as next week and he wants an all-British company”.

Currently at the Piccadilly, Viva Forever! closes at the end of June, to be replaced by Dirty Dancing which will have a limited run to February. The Savoy meanwhile is currently playing host to Beatles concert show Let it Be.

Newsies book writer Fierstein’s other current Broadway hit, Kinky Boots, is also rumoured to be making a transatlantic transfer next year.
