Fairview by Jackie Sibblies Drury wins 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama

Jackie Sibblies Drury's play Fairview has been awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The play, which was co-commissioned by Soho Rep and Berkeley Rep and premiered in 2018, also won the Susan Smith Blackburn prize earlier this year. It will return to the stage in New York in June.

In the piece, the Frasier family are preparing for a birthday, but things don't go to plan. Fairview plays with narrative and form and ensures both the audience's and the characters' experience head in unexpected directions.

The finalists in the category were Heidi Schreck's What the Constitution Means to Me and Clare Barron's Dance Nation, which ran at the Almeida Theatre last year.

Brooklyn-based playwright Dury has written several other plays including Marys Seacole, We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South West Africa, From the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884–1915 and Social Creatures.

It is the fourth time in the Pulitzer's history that the winning play and all the finalists were written by female playwrights.
