Curious Incident and Hamilton win big at Drama Desk Awards
The National Theatre production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was a big winner at last night's Drama Desk Awards in New York.
The play, adapted by Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon's bestselling novel, earned the top prize for Outstanding Play along with five other awards, including Outstanding Actor (Alex Sharp), Director (Marianne Elliott), Lighting Design (Paule Constable), Projection Design (Finn Ross), and Sound Design (Ian Dickinson).
Meanwhile Helen Mirren was on hand to collect the award for Outstanding Actress in a Play for her Broadway reprisal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience.
Elsewhere, the Public Theater production of the Broadway-bound musical Hamilton was named Outstanding Musical, the first time an off-Broadway production has won the category since Little Shop of Horrors in 1983. The show claimed a total of seven awards, including three for its creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who took home prizes for Book, Music, and Lyrics.
And The Elephant Man starring Bradley Cooper, which is currently playing in the West End, was named Outstanding Revival of a Play, while fellow West End transfer Just Jim Dale won Outstanding Revue. Benjamin Scheuer's The Lion, which originated at the St James Theatre, claimed Outstanding Solo Performance.
Produced by WhatsOnStage's owners TheaterMania, the Drama Desk Awards are the only major New York theatre honours for which productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway compete against each other in the same category.
