Disney confirms Tangled stage musical very much still in the works

Disney has confirmed that a full stage adaptation of the 2010 animated hit Tangled remains in active development.

The announcement came during an exclusive presentation for D23 attendees, where composer Alan Menken offered a first listen to a new song penned alongside long-time lyricist partner Glenn Slater. Menken previewed the material at the piano, showcasing music written specifically for the expanded stage version of the story.

The original film, which re-imagined the classic Rapunzel tale, featured an Oscar-nominated score by Menken and lyrics by Slater, including numbers such as “When Will My Life Begin?” and “I See the Light”. While a compressed 50-minute version of the show currently plays aboard Disney Cruise Line ships, this latest update marks the first official indication from Disney regarding the progress of a full-length theatrical adaptation in quite some time.

Parallel to the stage project, Disney also continues work on a separate live-action film adaptation of the beloved animated film, starring Kathryn Hahn.

Much more urgently than Tangled, Disney’s D23 showcase brought the confirmation of a West End transfer for The Greatest Showman.

Further details regarding creative team attachments, production timelines, or planned venues for the stage adaptation are yet to be announced.
