An Evening with The Pete Churchill Trio: What Else Did They Write?

About the Show

This is an evening for those who appreciate the art of the great songwriters of the early twentieth century – not only the obvious Broadway composers but, more specifically, the freelance songwriters. Come and hear the work of the great lyricists such as Johnny Mercer and Frank Loesser as well as the evocative bar-room ballads of Harold Arlen and Duke Ellington. Experience the wry jazzy humour of Hoagy Carmichael set alongside the dark poetry of Billy Strayhorn and take a whistle-stop tour through the work of the great writers who supplied so many songs for Frank Sinatra. You will hear familiar tunes such as Come Rain or Come Shine and I got it Bad and that ain’t Good – but along the way, in order fully to appreciate the craft of these great songwriters, we will ask the question What else did they write? Thus the evening will be a celebration not only of the familiar but also of the unfamiliar – the songs that never made it. We will hear some forgotten gems, often better than the standards which made the writers famous, and some which are definitely worse. This is an evening that promises to be informative, funny and moving in equal measure.
