Casting has been announced for the European premiere of Joshua Harmon’s We Had A World.

Exploring Harmon’s childhood in New York and relationships over 30 years, the play is directed by Josh Seymour. It has previously played Off-Broadway.

Set to star are Suzanne Bertish as Renee, Anna Francolini as Ellen and Ryan Kopel as Joshua.

They will be directed by Josh Seymour. He said: “I am so excited to work with this phenomenal cast to bring Joshua Harmon’s captivating play to life. Experiencing the dazzling talents of these acclaimed actors at such close quarters, in a play full of emotional fireworks, will be a real treat for audiences. It’s a deeply personal piece, exploring Joshua’s relationship with his fascinating, elusive grandmother, which moves me every time I read it. I have no doubt it will resonate with everyone who has experienced those strange moments when your perspective on someone you thought you knew inside out is turned upside down.”

Design is by Sarah Beaton, lighting design by Joshua Gadsby and sound design by Lex Kosanke. The movement director is Ingrid Mackinnon, the fight director is Bethan Clark, the dialect coach is Aundrea Fudge and voice coach Tess Dignan.

We Had A World will play at Hampstead Downstairs from 29 May to 4 July.

The Hampstead 2026 also includes the UK premiere of Kimberly Akimbo and Sarah Ruhl’s Stage Kiss.
