5. Now We Are Here – Young Vic

Ian Rickson (Mojo, Jerusalem) directs this new piece created by refugees as part of the Young Vic's 'Taking Part' initiative. The play is based on four true stories about refugees fleeing wars and travelling to Britain in the pursuit of freedom. Cast includes Gary Beadle and Golda Rosheuvel.

4. Pigs and Dogs – Royal Court

It might only be ten minutes long but this new play by Caryl Churchill – which looks at the Anti-Homosexuality Act passed in Uganda in 2014 – has attracted big talent, including director Dominic Cooke, Olivier Award-winner Sharon D Clarke (The Amen Corner), Fisayo Akinade (Barbarians) and Alex Hassell (Henry V).

3. Some Girl(s) – Park90

Carley Stenson (Legally Blonde, Hollyoaks) and Roxanne Pallett (Emmerdale) star in this revival of Neil LaBute's comedy. Made into a film in 2013, the play sees 'Guy' attempt to make amends with four ex-girlfriends before he gets hitched.

2. While the Sun Shines – Theatre Royal, Bath

When Terence Rattigan's play about crossed wires and mistaken identities opened in 1940 it ran for over 1000 performances. No pressure on Christopher Luscombe then, whose revival stars Tamla Kari (This is Living), Rupert Young (High Society) and Michael Cochrane (Wonderland).

1. Jesus Christ Superstar – Regent's Park Open Air Theatre

Summer seems to be officially here (touch wood) so what better way to celebrate than heading down to Regent's Park with a picnic and tickets to Timothy Sheader's take on Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar. With Declan Bennett (Once) in the titular role and choreography by Drew McOnie this is the must-see show of the season.
