As The Great Wave prepares to open at the National Theatre, we sat down with the show's director (and the Tricycle Theatre's artistic director) Indhu Rubasingham and the play's writer Francis Turnly to get an insight into the piece's real-life inspirations and how it went from a commission at the Tricycle through to a production at the National.

Turnly's award-winning piece follows teenage sisters Hanako and Reiko who are caught up in a storm, with one ending up in North Korea while the other left in Japan.

The production will star Kae Alexander, Rosalind Chao, Tuyen Do, Vincent Lai, Kwong Loke, Frances Mayli McCann, Kirsty Rider, Leo Wan and David Yip. It has design by Tom Piper, video design by Luke Halls, lighting design by Oliver Fenwick, music by David Shrubsole, sound design by Alexander Caplen, movement direction by Polly Bennett and fight direction by Kev McCurdy.

The Great Wave runs from 19 March to 14 April with previews from now.
