The show opens at the Hampstead Theatre later this year

Robert Lindsay and Jemma Redgrave will star in the world premiere of Springwood, a new play by Richard Nelson, opening at Hampstead Theatre. The production runs on the venue’s main stage from 19 June to 25 July 2026.
Nelson’s play is set in 1939 and centres on a pivotal meeting between King George VI and US President Franklin D Roosevelt, exploring the political and personal tensions surrounding the first visit of a reigning British monarch to the United States. The drama unfolds over a weekend at Roosevelt’s country home, where a seemingly informal picnic becomes a moment of international consequence as Britain seeks support in the lead-up to the Second World War.
Robert Lindsay will play President Roosevelt, with Jemma Redgrave as Eleanor Roosevelt. They are joined by Andrew Havill as King George VI and Rebecca Night as Queen Elizabeth. The wider cast includes Harry Anton, Teresa Banham, Oliver Cotton, Bryony Miller, Rachel Pickup and Eileen Nicholas.
Speaking about the project, Richard Nelson said the play focuses on the June 1939 visit to Springwood, Franklin Roosevelt’s country home, culminating in a “hot dog picnic” during “the very first visit of a reigning British Monarch to America.”
The production is directed by Richard Nelson, with design by Tom Piper, lighting design by James F Ingalis and sound design by John Leonard. Clarissa Brown serves as assistant director.
Springwood runs at Hampstead Theatre from 19 June to 25 July 2026, with tickets available now.
