Juliet Stevenson and Ria Zmitrowicz will star in the world premiere of a new play written and directed by Robert Icke at the Almeida in August.

Freely adapted from Arthur Schnitzler's 1912 play Professor Bernhardi, The Doctor, will run from 12 August to 28 September and will be Icke's final production as associate director at the north London theatre, following productions including Hamlet, Mary Stuart, Oresteia and Mr Burns.

Schnitzler's Professor Bernhadi explores antisemitism and Austrian-Jewish identity and was initially banned in Austria until the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The production will have design by Hildegard Bechtler, lighting by Natasha Chivers, sound by Tom Gibbons and casting by Julia Horan. Further casting is to be announced.
