This year’s jury, chaired by Ruth Leon, comprised Georgina Brown, theatre critic for the Mail on Sunday, playwright and screenwriter Martin Sherman, and actor, writer and director Simon Callow – the recipient of last year’s prize for My Life in Pieces.
Sondheim, whose book is a follow-up to 2010’s Finishing the Hat, receives a £2000 cash prize. He said: “I am genuinely surprised and thrilled. Recognition, liquor and cash –
what more could any writer want?”
