Paddington The Musical announces Australian premiere plans

Paddington The Musical will open in Sydney in September 2027, with performances set to take place at the Capitol Theatre.

The production marks the musical’s Australian premiere, following its West End debut at the Savoy Theatre in 2025 and ahead of a planned Broadway opening in April 2027.

The musical is presented by Sonia Friedman Productions, StudioCanal, Eliza Lumley Productions on behalf of Universal Music UK and Suzanne Jones. Casting for the Sydney production is to be announced. Based on Michael Bond’s A Bear Called Paddington and inspired by the films, the show features a book by Jessica Swale, music and lyrics by Tom Fletcher and direction by Luke Sheppard.

The production follows Paddington’s arrival in London from Peru and his adoption by the Brown family, before a rescue mission is launched when a villain targets the young bear. The musical won seven Olivier Awards in 2026, including Best New Musical, and also received nine WhatsOnStage Awards. For its West End run, the production is currently booking in London until February 2028.

The creative team includes musical supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Matt Brind, choreography by Ellen Kane, scenic design by Tom Pye, costume design by Gabriella Slade, Paddington and puppet design by Tahra Zafar, lighting design by Neil Austin, sound design by Gareth Owen, video design and animation by Ash J Woodward, hair, wig and make-up design by Campbell Young Associates, and Paddington casting consultant Annabelle Davis.

An original cast recording, produced by Brind, has been released on Decca Records.
