The London fringe theatre’s new season begins in early May
A revival of Heathcote Williams' play The Local Stigmatic (3 – 28 May) will open the new season at Islington's Old Red Lion Theatre.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the play, after it premiered at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh in 1966. The play, which follows two sociopathic British friends, was made into a film starring Al Pacino and directed by David Wheeler in 1990. Michael Toumey directs.
Elsewhere in the season, Odd Shaped Balls (31 May – 25 June) will be headlining a four week festival of sports theatre. Richard Sheridan's play, which was a hit at the Edinburgh festival, is the tale of one man's battle against homophobia in the world of professional rugby. The piece is directed by Andrew Twyman and staged by Plane Paper Theatre.
Ugly Lovely (28 June – 17 July) follows next from company Velvet Trumpet. It is the full-length premiere of Ffion Jones' play, which takes place in Swansea. Marking the playwright's debut, Ugly Lovely is a bittersweet comedy about Shell who is trying to find her place in the world.
