The heatwave caught on in theatreland – as July was a red-hot month for news!

From new openings of world premiere plays to much-anticipated casting announcements for fan-favourite shows, this month had it all.

Without further ado, in alphabetical order, here are the top Stage Names from this month.

Michael Abubakar

Westeros arrived on stage this month with the world premiere of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones: The Mad King. A huge cast is bringing the epic adaptation to Stratford-upon-Avon and among them is Michael Abubakar as the soon-to-be head of House Stark.

Allie Daniel

The live capture of Hadestown direct from the West End hit cinemas around the world throughout July, and one standout performance came from Allie Daniel as one of the Fates, asking: “What you gonna do when the chips are down?” Read the WhatsOnStage review of the film, which featured the original principal cast, here!

Neil Hurst

Just like the beat, we can’t stop Neil Hurst! The performer will reprise the role of Edna Turnblad for the new tour of Hairspray, and is set to see out the year back at The Other Palace with Jodie Prenger and their new musical comedy. This time, it’s a take on Bridget Jones!

Keziah Ibe

Our critic called Keziah Ibe “impressively in control as a warm and playful Eliza,” in their review of her professional debut leading Chichester’s revival of My Fair Lady. Absolutely loverly!

Lewis Kidd

Another massive title on the list, this one receiving its world premiere as a musical! Trainspotting The Musical opened in the West End, with Lewis Kidd in the central role of Renton. Impressively, he stepped into the role with little notice after the previous lead was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Linus Roache

Linus Roache will take on the title role of King Henry IV opposite Michael Sheen‘s Owain Glyndŵr in the Welsh National Theatre and Wales Millennium Centre co-production of Gary Owen’s new play, Owain and Henry. Sheen will also direct!

Travis Ross and the Rent cast

No day but today, to look up the cast of the West End revival of Rent! Travis Ross will play Roger opposite a cast full of stage favourites in this “bold new production”, directed by the WhatsOnStage and Olivier Award winner Luke Sheppard – who previously oversaw the five-star revival seen at the Hope Mill Theatre, which has “inspired” this version.

Summer Strallen

Four-time Olivier Award nominee Summer Strallen will be taking on the role of Delia in Beetlejuice for a limited season in the coming months. What a scream!

Nathan Sykes and the Hadestown cast

Wait for them, they’re coming! It has been all change at Hadestown with the incoming West End cast announced. Boyband member Nathan Sykes will play the poor boy with a song, with Fayth Ifil as his Eurydice. They will be joined by Olivier Award winner Danielle de Niese, Shaun Dooley as Hades and Malinda Parris as Hermes.

Charlie Varlet and the Dirty Dancing cast

We are so glad that nobody put Charlie Varlet in a corner! She is set to have the time of her life on the Dirty Dancing tour as Frances “Baby” Houseman. Joel Benjamin will be her Johnny Castle, with Ellie Fergusson playing Penny Johnson.
