Hamilton dominates 2016 Tony Awards

This year's Tony Award-winners have been announced with Lin-Manuel Miranda's West End bound Hamilton dominating the proceedings with a total of 11 awards.

The musical – which tells the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton – won awards for Best Costume, Lighting, Choreography, Book, Orchestrations, Score, Director, Featured Actress (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Featured Actor (Daveed Diggs), Best Actor (Leslie Odom Jr) and Best Musical.

British actress Cynthia Erivo, whose West End credits include I Can't Sing and Sister Act, won Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance in the Broadway transfer of the Menier Chocolate Factory's The Color Purple.

The awards were presented in a ceremony at the Beacon Theatre in New York City last night, hosted by James Corden. The evening included performances from all the nominated Best Musicals and Best Musical revivals including: Hamilton, School of Rock and The Color Purple. The cast of On Your Feet! were joined by Gloria Estefan for a special performance.
