Eddie Izzard’s Great Expectations to run in the West End 

Eddie Izzard will bring her one-woman version of Great Expectations to the West End stage this summer. 

Izzard’s piece, which sees the performer tackle 19 of Charles Dickens’ characters solo, will run for a limited 6 week season at the Garrick Theatre. 

The show, adapted from Dickens by Mark Izzard, was previously seen in New York in late 2022, where it picked up glowing reviews from critics. 

The piece is inspired by Izzard’s revelation that she is exactly 150 years younger than Dickens – and her experiences with dyslexia. It is directed by Selina Cadell, who said today: “I find the combination of Eddie Izzard’s idiosyncratic wit and Charles Dickens’ ingenious storytelling irresistible and am looking forward to sharing it with UK audiences.”

Izzard, known for her stand-up routines and specials, relentlessly teases out the script’s humor and gets the audience laughing in the most unexpected places. Just watch her eyes widen with Norma Desmond intensity as she speaks to Pip, and then try to repress your delight. Miss Havisham never looked so good.” 

The show runs from 24 May to 1 July at the Garrick.
