The Hope Mill Theatre has cancelled its planned production of Pasek and Paul's A Christmas Story, which was due to run at the Manchester venue this winter.

Written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul – the songwriting duo behind Dear Evan Hansen, The Greatest Showman and La La LandA Christmas Story was due to receive its UK premiere in October.

Instead, the theatre will now produce a revival of Putting It Together. The musical, which draws its title from a song in Sunday in the Park With George, celebrates the work of Stephen Sondheim and features almost 30 songs from the composer's shows including Sweeney Todd, Follies and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Having originally signed up to direct A Christmas Story, Bronagh Lagan will helm the production which runs from 24 October to 24 November.

Casting will be announced in due course.
