Maxine Peake to curate women's suffrage event at the Old Vic

The Old Vic has announced an evening of specially commissioned monologues to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act.

Maxine Peake will curate six new monologues written by writers in response to the anniversary and performed by an as-yet-unannounced cast. The event – part of the Old Vic's One Voice series funded by the TS Eliot Estate – will be entitled One Hand Tied Behind Us and takes place on Sunday 11 March, timed to correspond with International Women's Day on 8 March.

The 1918 Representation of the People Act enfranchised women over 30 years old who were either a member or married to a member of the Local Government Register, a property owner, or a graduate voting in a University constituency.

The theatre will also mark the anniversary – and their own 200-year anniversary – with their previously announced production of Sylvia (1 to 22 September), a new musical by Kate Prince. Written by Prince and Priya Parmar, the production will combine hip-hop, soul and funk to celebrate the life of women's rights campaigner Sylvia Pankhurst.
