Denise Gough to star in Conor McPherson's new BBC drama Paula

The pair will reunite after working on ”The Birds” in 2009

Denise Gough will star in Conor McPherson's first original television series Paula, which will air on BBC Two.

Gough, who won the Best Actress Olivier Award for her role in People, Places and Things, will play the titular character in the three-part drama which starts filming in Belfast next month. She appeared in McPherson's play The Birds at the Gate, Dublin in 2009.

She said: "Having worked with Conor McPherson on stage I am so excited to work with him again on this amazing project. He's written a script that I know all of us involved feel very privileged to be part of bringing to life.

McPherson's story is about the a young chemistry teacher and the fallout of her one-night stand with a dangerous ducker and diver.

Directed by Alex Holmes, the cast will also include Tom Hughes (Victoria) and Owen McDonnell (Spooks).

Broadcast dates are yet to be announced.
