Suffrageddon lays claim to the story of the suffragettes and retells it through the words of British women of colour over revolutionary hip hop beats. Created and composed by Rebecca Phillips and Mark Hodge, Suffrageddon is more than a musical, it’s a movement, as it boldly reshapes this familiar historical narrative that often fails to include women of colour. The story is from the past but the lyrics and music of the show are firmly rooted in modern hip hop with writing and performances from Roxxxan, Oracy Chambers, Aminita Francis and Koko Brown. In the lead role of Emmeline Pankhurst, Roxxxan conveys the political activists experience to devastating effect singing: “Looked down by neighbours / Labelled as traitors and shamed as beasts / We protested with peace / We protested with speech / But we’re still beaten streets / And hit by police.”
