Out of the Narrow Place: A Ritual for Black Descendants of Slaves

About the Show

This a meal, a ritual and a performance work in progress about what it means to be descended from African slaves. Born out of a desire to live fully, despite a painful history, and a difficult present, Artist Aleasha Chaunte is on a quest to create the perfect ritual to heal this most particular kind of pain. Aleasha is an artist who believes that art has a place in society. She considers herself a social justice worker and in collaboration with her long-term arts partner she runs One September. Past works include “The Handless Project” a two-year investigation into her favourite fairy tale and what it teaches us about how humans heal.

Content Warning: This piece deals with the topic of race and discusses the myriad experiences of those who have experienced harm because of racism.
