The winners of this year’s Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards for Best Shakespearean Production and Best Supporting Actress were delighted to receive their awards. Dominic Cooke – former RSC associate director and now artistic director of the Royal Court – accepted the prize for his production of As You Like It at the RSC, which won the Shakespeare accolade. Meanwhile, Helen Schlesinger picked up the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Elizabeth Proctor in the RSC’s production of The Crucible – also directed by Cooke.

Whatsonstage.com’s chief reviewer, Michael Coveney, presented Cooke with his award, while Roger Foss, What’s on Stage Magazine‘s editor, presented Schlesinger with her prize.

WHAT COOKE SAID:

As You Like It was a show that meant a great deal to me. I had an extraordinary cast led by Lia Williams and a first-rate team of Rae Smith, Paule Constable, Paul Arditti, Gary Yershon and Liz Ranken. Thank you so much to Whatsonstage.com and to everyone who voted for this show.”

WHAT SCHLESINGER SAID:

The Crucible was a production that I was so proud of and it feels really special that audience members who enjoyed it have voted. It’s thrilling when an accolade comes from the public. The fact that these awards have so many categories makes them feel more like a real celebration of what’s going on in theatre today.”
