Spotlight On: The Tickets.com Best Regional Production Award

Sponsored by Tickets.com, the WhatsOnStage award for Best Regional Production has, in previous years, been won by American Idiot (on tour), Sweeney Todd (Chichester Festival Theatre) and Chess (on tour).

This year, the shortlist is made up of three musicals, two Shakespeare's and features an incredible lineup of talent including David Tennant, Matthew Kelly and Kenneth Branagh.

1. Macbeth at the Manchester International Festival

Starring Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston, Manchester International Festival's Macbeth has been described as "a Macbeth which will go down as one of the Scottish Play’s great revivals" by the Daily Telegraph.

2. My Fair Lady at Sheffield Crucible

Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture Pygmalion, My Fair Lady received five star reviews galore with The Independent calling it "dazzling" with "an ensemble of striking excellence". Read our own 5 star review here.

3. Richard II – RSC at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon

The first production in a new cycle of Shakespeare's History plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Richard II was described in our review as a "complex, rolling, many-splendoured drama".

Starring David Tennant, the production has since transferred to the Barbican Centre where it runs until 25 January.

4. The Prodigals at the Belgrade, Coventry

The Prodigals began its life at The Edinburgh Festival before moving onto the The Belgrade with celebrated West End actor, Simon Bowman leading the cast.

Critics described it as "a night of raw emotion" and “an intensely moving story.”

5. To Sir, With Love at the Royal & Derngate, Northampton & on tour

Based on E R Braithwaite’s autobiography, To Sir, With Love is the story of Ricky Braithwaite, an ex-RAF fighter pilot and Cambridge graduate who arrives in London in 1948.

Starring Matthew Kelly, the Royal & Derngate production was described by Michael Coveney as a "stark and engaging stage version" in his review for WhatsOnStage.
