The season opens with a revival of W Somerset Maugham’s The Constant Wife, directed by Wilson, and with the same design team behind the Playhouse’s highly successful Private Lives and The Winslow Boy.
Other in-house productions include Pierre Marivaux’s The Game of Love and Chance translated by Neil Bartlett, a classic French farce, updated to a sixties house party setting; and marking a welcome return to the musical genre, Guys and Dolls, a co-production with Clwyd Theatr, Cymru and the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich. With a cast of 22 actor-musicians, and including such memorable songs as “Luck Be a Lady”, “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat” and “If I Were a Bell”, the first professional musical to be staged at the Playhouse for 5 years is sure to be a dazzling affair!
Visiting comapnies include Paines Plough, with their hit production of Love, Love, Love, and Headlong, in association with the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton, with their new production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights Dream.
The Playhouse’s youth theatre, Stage 65, celebrates its 45th anniversary with Euripides’ Women of Troy in the Salberg Studio, and in the main house spectacular season finale Around the World in 80 Days.
There is a full season of Theatre for Young People in the Salberg Studio, including The Elves and the Shoemaker from Stuff and Nonsense, and The Wolves of Willoughby Chase presented by Forest Forge and The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton.
The venue is also participating in the Salisbury International Arts Festival in June, with a full programme of events to be announced.
