”Sancho: An Act of Remembrance” will premiere at the Oxford Playhouse in September
It has been announced that Paterson Joseph is to star in one-man show Sancho – An Act of Remembrance. Written and performed by Joseph, the production is co-directed by Simon Godwin (Man and Superman, Strange Interlude).
Joseph's stage credits include Julius Caesar (RSC), Emperor Jones (National Theatre) and Saint Joan (National Theatre) whilst his television credits include Safe House and Peep Show.
Sancho: An Act of Remembrance follows Charles Ignatius Sancho as he prepares to sit for Thomas Gainsborough, leading portraitist of 18th-century English society. We are granted an insight into his remarkable story; that of a composer, actor, social satirist and general man of refinement; a story that casts new light on the early African British experience.
The production, commissioned by the Oxford Playhouse, was originally staged at the Burton Taylor Studio Theatre in Oxford in 2011. This new main stage production will premiere at the Oxford Playhouse 17 to 19 September before moving to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 22 to 25 September and touring the USA from October.
Sancho: An Act of Remembrance is designed by Michael Vale with music and sound by Ben Park and lighting by Lucrecia Briceño.
