The National Theatre are to tour Ivo van Hove's production of Hedda Gabler following its run in the Lyttleton.

The new version, adapted by Patrick Marber, opened at the National in December and stars Ruth Wilson and Rafe Spall. Henrik Ibsen's classic is about a woman who has just married and yet longs to be free.

In a five-star review of the production for WhatsOnStage, Sarah Crompton said the play "produces a Hedda unlike any I have ever seen" and was "full of pain and doubt".

The production marked van Hove's first at the theatre, and will be followed by Network which will star Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston.

Marber said he was 'thrilled that this tour will enable more people to see [Ivo van Hove's] incredible production.'

The production will tour to Plymouth (2 to 7 Oct), Edinburgh (17 to 21 Oct), Leicester (23 to 28 Oct), Salford (30 Oct to 4 Nov), Norwich (7 to 11 November), Hull (13 to 18 Nov), Aberdeen (21 to 25 Nov), Northampton (28 Nov to 2 Dec), Wolverhampton (23 to 27 Jan 2018), Nottingham (5 to 10 Feb), Newcastle (12 to 17 Feb) and Milton Keynes (27 Feb to 3 March).

Casting and further dates are to be announced.

The current London production will be broadcast to cinemas by NT Live on 9 March.
