Katori Hall's Our Lady of Kibeho to have UK premiere at Royal and Derngate
Our Lady of Kibeho by Olivier Award-winner Katori Hall will have its UK premiere at Northampton's Royal and Derngate in January next year.
Presented as part of the venue's Made in Northampton season, the piece will be directed by artistic director James Dacre. Based on real-life events, it follows a young girl in '80s Rwanda who claims to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary, warning her that her country will become hell on earth.
The play first premiered in New York in 2014, and will make its UK premiere with a cast featuring professional actors alongside the Royal and Derngate Community Ensemble and Young Company. It runs from 12 January to 2 February.
Hall's credits include The Mountaintop, the book for Tina the Musical and Hurt Village, which won the Susan Smith Blackburn Award and is currently in development as a feature film. She said: "I'm beyond ecstatic to work with James again and to bring Our Lady of Kibeho to the UK for the first time. In these turbulent times, I hope this piece will spark a dialogue within Royal and Derngate's surrounding community and beyond about healing cultural, political and racial divides."
