Winners of this year's UK Theatre Awards have been announced, with Sheffield Theatres' Everybody's Talking About Jamie picking up Best Musical and Best Performance In a Musical.

John McCrea, who plays Jamie in the new musical, took home Best Performance In a Musical, ahead of the show's West End opening in November.

Liverpool and Everyman artistic director Gemma Bodinetz was named as Best Director for the theatre's new repertory season, while the New Wolsey and Ramps on the Moon's production of Tommy took home Best Touring Production.

In the acting categories, Sharon Duncan-Brewster took home Best Supporting Performance for A Streetcar Named Desire at the Royal Exchange Theatre, and Joseph Millson won Best Performance in a Play for his role in the Royal Shakespeare Company's The Rover.

Best New Play was named as Narvik by Lizzie Nunnery, while Best Design was won by Jon Bausor for The Grinning Man at Bristol Old Vic. The show is also transferring to London later this year.

The Promotion of Diversity award went to New Wolsey Theatre and Ramps on the Moon for their work on inclusion and integration of deaf and disabled performers.

The awards were hosted by Sharon D Clarke and recognise theatre talent up and down the country on and off stage. As previously announced David Hare was honoured with the Gielgud Award while Lyn Gardner took home Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre.

At the awards a new award for Backstage Journalism was announced by the UK Theatre President Fiona Allan. The award is to support journalists who can tell the story of backstage and technical theatre.
