David Morgan has never thought he’s pretty enough. Keeping in mind that he was included in Heat magazine’s ’15 Hot New Men List 2012′, that might seem a bit odd, but the disarming honesty and humour with which he admits to the numerous ways in which he photoshopped the winning picture immediately sets the tone for the rest of the set.
The real success of this show is that Morgan can talk about all his achievements – the list, a gorgeous boyfriend of seven years and his rising comedy career – without ever coming across as a smug so-and-so or with his doubts about his looks being discounted. This is thanks to his friendly persona, honesty about his flaws and a gentle, genuinely interested line in audience interaction throughout the show.
Starting with a story about being dumped by a long term boyfriend due to his apparent diminished attractiveness, Morgan talks about growing up gay and geeky, his failed attempts to chat men up and what the legalisation of gay marriage means for his relationship. There are lots of laughs and not a dull moment, with a particularly enjoyable anecdote about gay couples attempting to trick their families into believing they haven’t actually met on Grindr.
Having first watched and enjoyed Morgan’s comedy a couple of years ago I can say that the development in his style to something much more articulate and genuine is marked. Certainly one to watch.
