The Bunker Theatre has announced its artistic director will be Chris Sonnex.

Sonnex takes over from Joshua McTaggart from today, after McTaggart announced he was stepping down in July. McTaggart is to take over as artistic director chief executive of the Chelsea Theatre.

Sonnex's previous work includes being community producer and artistic associate at the Royal Court. He began as an intern on Theatre Local Peckham and made his Royal Court debut co-directing katzenmusik in 2017.

He said: "In this exciting role I hope to continue enabling and championing the community of artists and
theatre makers originating from underrepresented backgrounds. The Bunker will endeavour to
open a gateway for artists, theatre professionals and audiences alike."

The theatre's new season begins with the world premiere of Eris by John King in 11 to 28 September which mixes Sinead O'Connor with Greek myths and dating apps, while in October company Pint-Sized present a week-long festival showcasing five short plays.

Knaive Theatre's War with the Newts arrives at the Bunker on 9 October following a run at Edinburgh Fringe. The show is based on the Karl Kapec sci-fi novel about a species of newt enslaved by the human race. In November Flux Theatre stage Chutney, a black comedy about love by Reece Connolly.
