Top 10 selling shows on WhatsOnStage in April

2018 has been flying by! We're already into the month of May, so thought now would be a great time to look back on some of our most popular shows from the last month. How many have you had a chance to see? And what are you looking forward to?

10. Chicago

Phoenix Theatre, booking until 6 October

The razzle-dazzle returned to the West End last month with class-act Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr along for the revenge-fuelled ride. A cult classic musical and a firm favourite among fans, it's no surprise to see the show on our top rankings for the month.

9. Summer Holiday

UK tour

Audiences were keen to take a trip down memory lane with the new UK tour of the classic musical Summer Holiday, based on the 1960s Cliff Richard film featuring the song of the same name. Bobby Crush joins Quinn in the tour, which opens at the Liverpool Empire this May before driving around the UK. With summer on the way (hopefully!), it's definitely the time for some feel-good tunes!

8. Wicked

Apollo Victoria London, booking until May 2019

Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's musical continues to be a firm favourite as it dances through its 12th year in the West End. The show currently stars Alice Fearn as Elphaba and Sophie Evans as Glinda, and it was announced today that David Witts will be joining as Fiyero in July.

7. Chess

London Coliseum, until 2 June

Audiences have been keen to get a piece of Chess ever since it was first announced late last year. And with a cast including Michael Ball, Alexandra Burke and Cassidy Janson, you can see why punters got on board with the revival – the first time the show's been seen in the West End in over 30 years. Considering the presence of the ENO's orchestra and huge video projections, it definitely sounds like you get a lot of Bang(kok) for your buck!

6. Little Shop of Horrors

Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, until 5 May

WhatsOnStage audiences were over the moon to discover that Little Shop was making its return to London – and the full cast announcement also went down a storm. With Busted star Matt Willis, Romantics Anonymous's Marc Antolin and One Man, Two Guvnors's Jemima Rooper joined by drag queen Vicky Vox (playing the most famous carnivorous plant in theatrical history Audrey II), you'll be green with envy if you miss out!

5. Aliens Love Underpants

Underbelly Festival, Southbank Centre, 9 April to 3 June

Back for its second month on our top ten, it seems audiences love this show as much as the aliens love the underpants! After his work on the acclaimed stage adaptation of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive, Adam Bampton-Smith of Big Wooden Horse brings Claire Freedman and Ben Cort's international bestselling children's novel to the stage. Expect madcap action, original music and underpants, of course.

4. Quiz

Noël Coward Theatre, until 16 June

James Graham's stellar run in the West End seems endless, all the more exciting given that his previous show Ink, which starred Bertie Carvel and Richard Coyle, announced its Broadway transfer earlier this week. At the moment his newest play Quiz, based on the famous 'coughing major' scandal from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, rules the roost down on St Martin's Lane.

3. Heathers the Musical

The Other Palace, 9 June to 4 August

Carrie Hope Fletcher is no stranger to our top-selling lists, and seeing her return to the stage in the full production of new musical Heathers (based on the cult classic '80s film of the same name) had fans clamouring for tickets. With The Other Palace firmly committed to championing new musicals, it's exciting to see a show kicking up a storm so early in its lifespan.

2. Love Actually in concert – with live orchestra

UK tour, December 2018

God only knows why you wouldn't want to book tickets to see Richard Curtis's Love Actually, projected onto the big screen and with live orchestral accompaniment. The perfect festive film and an all-star cast have made this a big hit among punters and, when presented in the grandest way possible, all you'll want for Christmas is the chance to see it.

1. An Ideal Husband

Vaudeville Theatre, until 14 July

Fans seem to have gone Wilde for the prospect of seeing family members Edward and Freddie Fox take to the stage together in the new production of An Ideal Husband, as part of Dominic Dromgoole's year-long celebration of all things Oscar W at the Vaudeville Theatre. Following the previous two shows, A Woman of No Importance and Lady Windermere's Fan, An Ideal Husband has all the expected japes and satirical comedy to make for a laughter-fuelled night in the West End.
