Chess to return to the West End

Tim Rice, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus's hit musical Chess is to return to the West End next year.

The show, which was last professionally produced in a 2010 UK tour, will open at the Coliseum next year for the first time in 30 years next summer for five weeks only. Tickets go on sale from 3 November.

The show will be directed by Laurence Connor (School of Rock, Miss Saigon) with choreography by Stephen Mear.

The musical first began life as a concept album in 1984 before opening in the West End in 1986 starring Tommy Körberg, Murray Head and Elaine Paige. The show opened on Broadway two years later, where it was nominated for two Tony Awards.

Set against the backdrop of Cold War anxiety, the piece charts the one-upmanship between two chess players, Freddie Trumper and Anatoly Sergievsky. It features songs including "One Night in Bangkok" and "I Know Him So Well".

The cast will be announced in due course.

Chess will open at London's Coliseum at 1 May and runs until 2 June 2018, with previews from 26 April.
