A concept album for the new musical Murder at the Gates will be released on 1 July 2026, with the first track, “F**kin’ Scream”, now available.

The musical has a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by James Bourne. It is described as a murder mystery set within a gated American community. The story follows Cameron, whose father organises a murder mystery birthday party following the death of her mother and the end of a relationship with her boyfriend Ethan. It all gets a bit dicey when a staged murder appears to become real.

Speaking about the project, Sater said: “Back in the day, when I was first conceiving Spring Awakening, I was urged to update the story to contemporary times. As I suspected, that didn’t work. But that energy spilled into Murder at the Gates, a black comic look at how totally effed life can be as a young person today.”

The first song released from the album, “Fuckin’ Scream”, features Gaten Matarazzo as Graham. Matarazzo is soon set to star in the new West End revival of Rent.

The album cast also includes Milo Manheim, Isa Briones, Joy Woods, Helen J Shen, Mason Alexander Park, Casey Likes and Ramin Karimloo.

An earlier version of the musical was presented at New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2013, before rehearsed readings at the Other Palace in London in 2019 and a workshop with Madison Wells Media in New York City in 2024.

The album track list comprises “Something That’s Sure”, “The Mirror Sighs”, “A Fine Rigor Mortis”, “Love, Cream, & Sugar”, “Our Country Bleeds”, “Lady Fingers”, “Mortified”, “Put Another Love to Bed”, “It’s Nothing”, “Girl Went Down”, “Cameron the Lonely”, “F**kin’ Scream” and “No One Sits On High”.
